Step 1 – Tighten all the bolts starting from the inside and move to the bolts outside.
Step 2 – Apply engine oil over all the seat surfaces and bolt threads. This will help you to reduce friction over different surfaces.
Step 3 – Tighten each of the bolts to 39.2 N.m.
Step 4 – Tighten the bolts at 180 degrees. This is also known as angle tightening.
Step 5 – Loosen all the bolts completely to 0 N.m.
Step 6 – Re-tighten the bolts to 39.2 N.m.
Step 7 – Tighten the bolts at 90 degrees (also falls under angle tightening).
Step 8 – Repeat step 7 again.
Consequences of Getting Torque Settings Wrong
Many mechanics do not get the torque settings right even though they know all about fastening nuts and bolts. However, this setting is very important, and getting it wrong can lead to dire consequences. The torque can either be insufficient or in excess.

Engines vibrate as they run. With the perfect level of fastening force, you are sure that bolts transfer the belt load and hit to the engine. When torque is insufficient, the bolt suffers the impact which leads to shearing.
It is also possible for the vibrations in the engine to lead to the nuts or bolts getting undone. This in turn displaces the tensioner. The result of this is incorrect belt tension and ultimately, engine damage.
With the explanation above, it is tempting to just have excess torque. However, this is also dangerous for your vehicle. It can lead to damage to plastic or nylon present in some tensioners and idler pulleys.
Excess torque may also damage your vehicle’s bearing or the screw thread of certain bolts. Once this happens, attaining the right clamping load afterward becomes impossible.
